SET Secure Electronic Transaction

The SET protocol is an Internet standard which allows the merchants, financial institutions and credit card owners that take part in a payment transaction to be identified. Data encryption is added in order to further ensure the confidentiality and safety of the payment.

The SET protocol was developed by MasterCard and Visa to provide the parties in a secure transaction with a true insurance comparable to or safer than a transaction in a real store.

SSL Secure Sockets Layer

The SSL protocol is the most widespread and accepted protocol for Internet transactions.

It was developed by Netscape to provide communication between two parts of the Internet. Secure communication is possible through the encryption of sent data, which can then only be gathered by the Web site specified by the messenger.

Differences between SET and SSL

The SET protocol receives authentication of the transaction's origin. The configuration of the software involved certifies the merchant or service supplier's identity . Thus, the SET transaction creates a "tunnel" which allows credit card information to be sent directly to the financial institution without the merchant or online payment service supplier seeing or decoding it.

Conversely, the SSL protocol encrypts information without having certification of the transaction's source. The SSL protocol is very secure in terms of encryption and interception by third parties. The risk of losing the transaction is minimal. Generally, a transaction initiated by a customer over the Internet is made with the encrypted SSL protocol between merchant and customer. The SET protocol is always used between LAN@SYS Experts-Conseils and the Banque Royale financial institution for the approval of bank transactions.
